What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis is evidence-based therapy that focuses on skill acquisition and reducing behaviors that interfere with learning. ABA uses teaching methods to break complex skills down into smaller, more manageable steps to help facilitate skills acquisition. ABA also focuses on teaching skills in the natural environment that they occur in. 

How do you find a provider that will work best for your family? It is important to identify a provider who is compassionate and willing to support your family. Some things that can be red flags or you should ask about include:

• What is the turnover rate for therapists?
• Are they recommending a high amount of hours prior to assessment?
• What is the average number of clients per BCBA?
• Are they discouraging other services?
• Are they requiring that you pull your child from school when they are successful in school?
• Do they offer Diagnostic services, but only list their company as a recommendation?
• If they use words such as Assent-based treatment or Trauma-informed care, ask what that looks like?
